Francis M. was our merchant grandfather, Francis Moran. He sold top-quality loose leaf tea to shops on the western coast of Ireland in the 1920s and '30s. He would meet the shopkeeper who inevitably had food/sundries/hardware on one side and a bar on the other. The tea samples were kept in a little tan leather case in individual metal canisters to ensure freshness. A kettle would be boiled and he and the shop keeper would taste each, one by one. They would even check for tea dust levels by moving dry leaves across a sheet of white paper. The shopkeeper would make his or her choices, the order noted, and some time later the tea chests would arrive down from the warehouses in Dublin.

Francis first sold his wares by getting around on a push bike.  As business grew, he moved up to a motorised bike.  He eventually bought one of the first Ford Model T motorcars west of the River Shannon and his selling life became a little more comfortable. Chauffeur included.

Our inspiration comes from the fact that Francis Moran was a man who believed fervently in the goods he sold...so much so, he was prepared to travel for many hilly miles on a push bike...rain or shine.  So when his grandson Seán began to bring the very best of Irish goods to the world he thought it fitting to name the brand after his grandfather.
