Huckaback Appreciation.

francis-m-luxury-bedding-irish-linen-huckaback-appreciation-society-charterWe, the members of the curious Huckaback Appreciation Society, band together in our love and admiration of a mercurial towelling constructed of 100% finest linen known as the huckaback. We agree to uphold the unique, and very traditional, standards to which we have grown accustomed and believe to be the way forward in these modern times.

~ A towel which absorbs water faster than you can say Jeeves, A towel which promises to air-dry quickly, without the use of modern conveniences such as the hot-air dryer which is a drain on ones resources as well as on Mother Earth.  A towel which promises never to smell dank - something ill-considered by Mr. C in 1850 when he introduced the fluffy cotton towel ~ a haven for pathogenic bacteria, mould, fungi and virus...mmm, recall that whiff?  A towel which gently exfoliates the skin thus negating the need for expensive beauty products with microplastics which pollute our oceans and water resource.  A towel which will last for years and years, become a dear friend, and develop a beautiful lustre over time. A towel which is so efficient of space that it will travel with you easily on sojourn or a visit to the spa waters & gymnasium.

Our patron, the upstanding and staunchly traditional purveyor of Irish Linen, Francis M. will generously sponsor our annual supper club at Miss Leslie's castle where the roast beef and currant cake are said to be the finest on the Irish isle. We will be certain to stand and make a toast to all that is huckaback and sleep well knowing that our bathrooms are in good order. What was once old, is new again. We promise to inspire others, & bring this venerable amenity forward for the general betterment of all society.  copyright Francis M. 2017, on this chilly day the 22nd of October. { francis-m.com }

Is your bath towel making you sick?

Conventional fluffy cotton towels get wet. And while they may look clean, they often sit for days in warm, moist bathrooms collecting makeup, dust, dirt and dead skin particles which provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungal growth.

These infested damp towels can cause such problems as a bacterial infection like impetigo, fungal infection like tinea and bacterial build-up on the skin causing blemishes and acne breakouts. On a more serious note, viruses that can cause the cold, the flu, sores, pink eye, warts hide in towels. Not to mention more serious cases like MRSA and staph infections can spread through unsanitary towels.

"We have re-introduced the linen bath towel which is naturally resistant to fungi, micro flora, mould and bacteria and therefore does not provide a friendly breeding ground for these illness-causing pathogens. The towels can also be machine-washed at 90°C, may be boiled, dried in the sun and hot-ironed thereby ensuring maximum sterilization and the elimination of pesky critters."

If a bathroom is well ventilated, a cotton towel may dry out quickly after use, and the chance of bacteria or fungi surviving on that towel is lower. However, a towel more often than not takes hours to dry out because of the thick fluffy looped terry and that the bathroom is usually humid and maintains moisture. Then you are at higher risk of growing microbes in that towel. Linen towels, on the other hand, air-dry quickly.

"Irish Linen towels were always, and still are, found in the grand country houses of Ireland and England. Even on the Titanic as only the best linen would do.  Who would have thought all these years later we appreciate them for their health benefits?".

The FRANCIS M. linen towel is available in two sizes - a generously sized bath towel and smaller hand towel. The looser and larger weave produces an uneven surface and makes it highly absorbent and also gives a micro-massaging effect helping to exfoliate the skin and give the feeling of spa in your own bathroom. Being thin and lightweight, the linen towel is perfect for gym, travel, beach house and baby swaddling cloth. Available in the appropriately traditional broken white/ecru which will lighten and get softer with use. See http://francis-m.com/collections/bath for details.

Queen Elizabeth II and a healthier sleep

While Irish linen is the preferred fabric at Buckingham Palace for its fineness of the woven cloth still achievable by Irish weavers, the Queen may be surprised that she pioneers a healthier night's sleep than those sleeping in fine luxury cotton.

Europeans have long-favoured Irish linen for their bedding because of its gossamer fineness, feel, tensile strength, durability and the fact that it lasts decades with very little care. However, with further investigation, this reputable cloth reveals itself to be remarkably high-tech and a far healthier way to get a good night's sleep.

Linen is highly hydroscopic and can rapidly absorb and yield 20% of its own weight in moisture while still feeling dry to the touch. When linen sheets are in contact with the skin, the nodes along the length of the fiber absorb perspiration, swell and then release the moisture to the outside air, thus being a wholly natural fabric self cooled by evaporation. As a result, linen is a popular choice for bedding in hot climates or during warmer seasons where the skin temperature can be 3°- 4°C lower than when sleeping in cotton or silk keeping you fresh and cool.

Sleeping in linen sheets is akin to bathing in natural antiseptic. Linen is naturally resistant to fungi, micro flora, mould and bacteria and therefore does not provide a breeding ground for these illness-causing pathogens. According to medical studies conducted by Japanese researchers, bed-ridden patients do not develop bedsores when linen sheets are used. Similar qualities were noted centuries ago when it was observed that wounds under linen dressing healed faster than under cotton.

Linen has a symbiotic and pampering relationship with the human body. It does not provoke allergic reactions, does not accumulate static and the crisp "rich wrinkle" known to the well-heeled and aristocracy for centuries caresses the body like no other fabric on earth.

"If you've not slept in our Superfine Irish Linen then I'll go as far as to say that you have not slept…" says young challenger brand FRANCIS M., and avid proponent of authentic Irish Linen which must be woven in his homeland of Ireland to be deemed the genuine article.

Linen sheets can easily be machine-washed at 90°C, may be boiled, dried in the sun and hot-ironed thereby ensuring maximum sterilization and the elimination of pesky critters such as dust mites.

"While the Queen has always appreciated that fine Irish Linen is extremely durable and made to last, I know that she will chuckle to find that she has been pioneering the way for better bedding. And in a way which has absolutely nothing to do with threadcount!".
